Memories by Lord Redesdale - Volumes 1 & 2

£30.00

Product description

A well illustrated set of Lord Redesdale's memoirs. First Edition in two volumes, pages numbering is continuous through the two books.

The biography of Algernon Bertram Freeman-Mitford, 1st Baron Redesdale (1837 - 1916). A British diplomat, collector and writer, he was the paternal grandfather of the Mitford sisters. Entered the Foreign Office in 1858 and appointed Third Secretary of the British Embassy in St Petersburg. Served in the Diplomatic Corps in Peking and Japan as second secretary to the British Legation. He resigned from diplomatic service in 1873 and subsequently acted as secretary to HM Office of Works, involved in restoration of the Tower of London and landscaping parts of Hyde Park.

Externally the books show signs of shelf wear and handling with a small tear to the top of the spine of Volume 2. The hard covers have retained good blue colour and gold lettering. The front page of Volume 1 is substantially detached although still remains attached at the top. The binding is pulled at this point but otherwise the binding is sound. The sewn binding of Volume II is also sound although pulled in a few places and the tissue protection (if there was one) is missing from the frontispiece photograph. Throughout both books there are signs of foxing and tanning but otherwise the pages are clean and unmarked.
