£100.00

Product description

A detailed history and life of this titled soldier and politician. He saw active service from the 1745 Scottish campaign to the Seven Years war. A competent soldier, he was famous for his treatment of his troops, who responded by holding him in high regard. Now famous for having the largest number of pubs in the UK named after him, this is thought to be due to the habit of setting up retiring troops in hostelries on their departure
Macmillan hardback with no DJ. A very handsome volume in full leather, 5 raised bands to spine. Gilt edging to front and rear boards. Gilt decoration to spine cover with gilt print on red leather. Mild wear to the spine cover at top and some small blemishes. Owner’s name on ffep dated 1902. Obliterated line on opposite end page (?Tippex). Many illustrations, mainly in black and white but with a single colour plate. Most of the plates have tissue protection. Fold out map at rear in good condition. Silk place holder. Edges of text block marbled. Eight appendices.
A large and heavy book which may invoke additional postal costs.
