Mines and Mining of the Lake District by John Postlethwaite F.G.S - Title continues : "To which is added a Synopsis of the State Papers relating to the Mines in Newlands, and Smelting Works at Keswick; copied from the Calendar of State Papers, published by Robert Leon, Esq., FSA". Rebound in green cloth boards, in excellent condition. Includes 11 pages of adverts. from the original and complete folded map. The author, Postlethwaite was one of a small number of "amateur" geologists in the Lake District, whose work in the nineteenth century provided the basis for later geological surveys. Some slight staining to pages and age-darkening, but contents generally sound and clean. xi plus 99 pages, illustrated, plus one or two pages of promotion.
