A scarce work by a chaplain and naval instructor of the Royal Navy, who was also an examiner in Navigation and Nautical Astronomy to the Royal Navy College at Greenwich. Blue cloth boards with gilt titling to the spine. Staining to the boards and spine, particularly heavy on the front board. The head and tail of the spine are rubbed and crushed, there is wear to the board edges, and the corners are worn and bumped. The front and rear hinges are weakened, with exposed webbing, but remain firmly attached. The name of a previous owner, and date, appear in ink on the half title page, also in pencil on the verso of each free end paper (front and rear), and again in several places faintly in ink and in pencil on the dark blue pastedowns and the dark blue verso of the rear free end paper. The pages are rather yellowed, and there is scattered foxing throughout. There is a 5 mm closed tear in the fore edge of pages 231/2 (with a resulting small fold of the page margin). An ink stain affects the leading margins of pages 271 to 296 (inc), approx. 25 mm from the foot of the pages, and correspondingly the fore edges. The text block is tightly bound. Overall in fair condition.
