Navy & Army Illustrated. Vol II

£1,000.00

Product description

Navy & Army Illustrated. Vol II.

Published by Country Life Limited in 1915. pp440.
New series; comprising twelve editions from Saturday 31 October 1914 to Saturday 16 January 1915.

Extremely scarce example of title: strongly bound in navy blue and tan buckram with engraved gilt titles to front and spine. The boards are a little marked, with one or two minor dents to the edges, but the corners are excellent. Paste downs in floral filigree; frontispiece plate of Admiral Jellicoe, looking serene with his telescope.
Some pages foxed; all pages tanned. Block edges deckled and speckled pink. Rear inner hinge is cracking and the webbing is clearly visible.

Nearly every page of this heavy book carries unusual vintage photographs of the machinery of war in all of its forms; totally unique and highly absorbing. The Boxing Day 1914 edition shows British soldiers playing snowballs but no mention is made of the famous midnight football match. The November issue shows a half built Hindenburg.

Highly informed narrative throughout; the magazine title was amalgamated with "The King" in 1903 and made a brief showing between October 1914 and January 1915.
This book will be of great interest to all connoisseurs of the Great War and will provide an invaluable supply of reading material.

Oxfam Bookshop Market Harborough

Oxfam is the UK's largest second hand bookseller. Oxfam bookshops offer a wider selection of books than most shops, from modern fiction and leisure interest to more specialist subjects, classics, and rare or collectable books. We also stock an attractive range of greetings cards and a good selection of stationery. Come and browse!

Could you help us by collecting donations from donors homes? Our shop receives many offers of generous donations that we have to turn down as we do not have volunteers able to collect. We would ask you to collect in your own car, at your convenience and reimburse your petrol costs. It might be a couple of times a month and would make a really big difference to our ability to make money.
