Of Aucassin & Nicolette and Amabel and Amoris - SIGNED

£150.00

Product description

Aucassin et Nicolette (12th or 13th century) is an anonymous medieval French 'chantefable', or combination of prose and verse (literally, a "sung story". Amabel and Amoris is another similar work.

Laurence Housman (1865–1959) was an English playwright, writer and illustrator, whose prolific output comprised: 10 novels, 25 shorter works & collections thereof, 55 plays (some scandalous and only performed privately), 13 volumes of poetry, 23 non-fiction works, and this one translation from Old French.

Paul Vincent Woodroffe (1875–1954) was a British book illustrator and stained-glass artist.
Clemence Annie Housman (1861–1955) was an author, illustrator and activist in the women's suffrage movement. She was the sister of A. E. Housman and Laurence Housman.

Our book is in nice condition, bound in age-darkened vellum with half flaps on the long edges. Spine is richly decorated in gilt, with title etc at the top, and publisher's name (now quite worn) at the foot. Gilt page tops. Roughcut pages. Inside, decorated endpapers with rosebush design. The binding is firm with no loose pages; pages generally clean and bright, but occasional foxing. Illustrations are by Paul Woodroffe and Clemence Housman, and the frontispiece retains its tissue guard (heavily foxed). Red ribbon marker detached but present at the back of the book. 4 black and white plates, chapter drop-caps. The halftitle page bears an inscription from Laurence to John Baillie (undated), and beneath it, another from Baillie to James Boswell, dated 1925. This may be the John Baillie who was a Scottish theologian, as Housman wrote several non-fiction books on religious subjects.
