On the Site of the Globe Playhouse of Shakespeare

£14.99

Product description

On the Site of the Globe Playhouse of Shakespeare
Lying to the North of Maiden Lane, Bankside, Southwark

George Hubbard, FSA, Vice-President RIBA
Cambridge at the University Press, 1923.

Hardback; 225 x 295 mm; green boards with titles in gold on spine and front cover; 47 pages; frontispiece and 12 loose plates in a pocket attached to the back paste-down endpaper. No dust jacket.
The book is in fair condition. The binding is sound. The covers are worn. Remains of a presentation label pasted on to the front paste-down endpaper. Previous owner inscriptions on the front endpapers. Tanning of the front and back endpapers.

“For a long period there has been considerable uncertainty and diversity of opinion as to the exact site of the Globe Playhouse. The solution of the question may not be a matter of vast importance to anyone: but, in view of the fact that the Shakespeare Reading Society has erected a large bronze memorial to commemorate the site, and that the London County Council have published an official document which purports to settle the question, the matter assumes a certain importance which it would not otherwise have had…. In this century new material has been found, including contemporary documents, from which data are available for the more exact determination of the site.”
