Phantom pain

£12.99

Product description

This book is in fine condition. It is written in German and English. It is a collection of paintings by the artist Shan Fan. Begun in 2006, Shan Fan's series of figurative paintings in oil on canvas marks a distinct change in artistic direction - he himself describes his decision to employ a narrative visual language as an 'inner break'. The first paintings in the series deal with social issues related to contemporary China, while those from 2007 onwards address the reality of the artist's personal life, presenting his alter ego in an imaginary group picture with former fellow students at the art academy in Hangzhou, for example, or in scenes with his two sons. It quickly becomes apparent that this project is not about the mimetic depiction of reality, but rather that Shan Fan is on the one hand engaged in a reflective review - positioning himself vis-a-vis his past life in China from the distance of the West - and on the other he is exploring the emotional tensions underlying the life he leads now. The artist gives the viewer only a hint of these very private intentions, however: his aim is not to make purely biographical pictorial statements but to create subjectively universal visual narratives.
