Product description

Power for Sale

John Knittel

Hutchinson & Co Publishers (Ltd), London; nd. Foreword dated June 1939.

Hardback; 135 x 190 mm; red boards with black titles on spine; 495 pages. Original unclipped dust jacket.

Taken together, the book and dust jacket, particularly the jacket, are in poor condition. The jacket is grubby and tanned, including internally, with open and closed tears. The binding is sound with some wear to the boards. Page end tanning.

“This returns Knittel to the scene of his first book, Via Mala, in a story of the Swiss Alps. The theme of the story has definite imaginative appeal, in the fictionization of the Atlantropa project, an actual project for draining the Mediterranean through power, cultivating the new lands for the over-populated countries, supplying greater food sources, more labor. The conception of the project alternates with a love story between the visionary master-builder and a girl, whom he loves but will not marry since his life is dedicated to his ideal. She marries, goes away, eventually returns to him, and the project. The book has vigor, it catches one's fancy. The characterization leaves something to the reader, there are spots of over-writing, but it's good reading.” (Kirkus Review 19 October 1939)
