Rare (Putnam, 1963) Miss Jemima's Swiss Journal: the First Conducted Tour of Switzerland - First Tour by Thomas Cook. Rare

£80.00

Product description

On 26 June 1863, sixty-four excited ladies and gentlemen left London on the very first tour of Switzerland arranged by Thomas Cook, the excursionist - marking the beginning of a tourist movement which now involves millions of people a year.

"Miss Jemima" was commissioned by the Junior United Alpine Club to write an account of their adventures. This she did, and the account was privately printed and circulated on her return. This edition, published by Putnam in 1963 to mark the 100th anniversary of the tour, is copyright Thomas Cook & Son Ltd.

The book includes her journal of the tour, a map showing their route, and 32 illustrative plates. Jemima's last name is unknown, as the journal was discovered among other old papers relating to Thomas Cook & Son Ltd in a bombed London warehouse in 1947, but she is described as an artist and physician.
