Readings in Biography: A Selection of the Lives of Eminent Men of All Nations

£9.99

Product description

Readings in Biography: A Selection of the Lives of Eminent Men of All Nations
Published under the direction of the Committee of General Literature and Education, appointed by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge
John W Parker, London, 1844; 5th edition, enlarged.
Hardback; 115 x 170 mm; dark brown boards with gold titles on spine; decorative design on front and back covers; 408 pages plus 8 pages listing “approved books”; top edge painted. No dust jacket.
The book is in poor condition though the binding is sound. The covers and spine are worn and seriously scuffed, and the top part of the spine is completely detached but present. Bumping as is to be expected. The front paste-down endpaper has a small label “S CURTIS BINDER”, and a larger label “Anna Mary Lawrence” with the name crossed through. The recto of the front free endpaper is annotated in black ink “Philippe R. Holli”. A small pencil scribble on the verso. There is tanning, some foxing, and some dog ears.
“The design of this work is to supply youthful students with an outline of the lives of those who have had the most important share in effecting the revolutions which form epochs in history.” It is very much of its time and outlook, no women being included. It may appeal to those studying social attitudes over time and how these have now changed rather than strictly an historical interest.
