This remarkable work was published by the Thorvaldsen Museum in connection with an exhibition of photographs of Rome taken during the reign of Pius IX held at the Museum in 1977 within the framework of the Danish-Italian cultural agreement. The 210 striking photographs come from both public and private collections in Rome and Copenhagen and include copies of both daguerrotypes and calotypes from the earliest era of photography. Included with the scenes of Rome are pictures of social interest, including portraits and group photographs, and images of significant events.

Very good condition. White paper covered boards with brown text to front and spine. Head and tail of spine are bumped but cover otherwise clean and undamaged. Internal pages clean and text bright with well reproduced images. Dust wrapper shows some minor edge wear with chipping and short closed tears, mainly at the head and tail of the spine.
