1871. Title page states: Fourth Thousand. By Edward Whymper. Probably the most famous mountaineering book ever written.

Edward Whymper (1840- 1911) was a British mountaineer, explorer, illustrator, and author best known for the first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865 during which four members of his party were killed on the descent. Whymper also made important first ascents on the Mont Blanc massif and in the Pennine Alps, South America, and the Canadian Rockies. He also contributed significantly to the advancement of Arctic exploration through his travels in Greenland.

Book in green boards with gilt embossed spine. Corners bumped. Some rubbing to top and bottom of spine. Light shelf rub. All 5 maps present. One or two small tears at the hinge.

Prior owner's name inscribed on front inside endpaper, H.R.C. Carr. Carr was himself a climber, author of the book Mountains of Snowdonia, and one time president of the Climbing Club.
