Secular Goldsmiths' Work in Medieval France: A History

£19.99

Product description

Secular Goldsmiths' Work in Medieval France: A History

R.W. Lightbown

This important study by R.W. Lightbown of the Victoria and Albert Museum, is the product of considerable research and deals with the gold and silver secular plate of medieval France from the historical, antiquarian, artistic and iconographical standpoints. It contains a corpus of all the surviving examples illustrated in colour and black and white, bringing out the central role played by France in the history of Gothic art and medieval social life. The author has made extensive use of documentary evidence, such as inventories of royal plate, and his sensitive aesthetic analysis of the known pieces makes the work an outstanding contribution to the history of art.

Condition good overall, although the dust jacket displays some damage (see photo). Clean unmarked text,  illustrations consist of eighty plates mostly B/w.
