Product description

Undated, published by John F Shaw and Co. Illustrated boards with decorative end-papers.

Described as a 'New Edition' on the title page. A gift inscription indicates in the front is dated 1896.

Subtitled: A Tale of the First Century, this is a lovely story written by Emily Sarah Holt; about a slave in Pompeii at the time of the eruption of Vesuvius. After various adventures the slave girl is saved by converting to Christianity. Includes several black & white illustrations by M Irwing.

There is a long dedication on the title page stating that this a special first prize awarded to Ellen Humphries at St Marks Girls School, Cheltenham in 1896.
