Product description

Station X: The Codebreakers of Bletchley Park

by Michael Smith

Published by Channel 4 Books (2000)

Signed by the author "for Jimmy & Joan with many thanks for all your help. Michael Smith 13/1/99".

Jimmy is Jimmy Thirsk (1904 - 2018) who was an intelligence analyst at Bletchley Park during the second world war, who worked with the codebreakers to help crack the Enigma ciphers. Joan is Joan Watkins, while at Bletchley Jimmy had met and fallen in love with Joan a fellow intelligence analyst, they married in September 1945.

The book is in very good condition, hardly any shelf wear, a slight if not unnoticeable yellowing to page edges. What makes this book unique is that Jimmy has put in it four pages of "Notes on Station X" in his own handwriting concerning the book, with references to certain pages, and annotated one of the photographs with some comments on a piece of paper.

Tied to a Channel 4 television series in three one-hour parts, this is the story of the breaking of the Enigma code at Bletchley Park during World War II. That remarkable feat - breaking a code that the Germans believed to be unbreakable - was to play a major part in the outcome of the war. The book draws on official files and the testimonies of survivors to tell the story of a unique institution and the people who worked there.

Includes a booklet "Biographical Memoirs of Fellows of the British Academy XIV" about Joan Thirsk.
