Swaledale & Wharfedale Remembered - Aspects of Dales' Life Through Peace and War

£21.99

Product description

Swaledale and Wharfedale Remembered tells the fascinating story of the part played by Arkengarthdale, Swaledale, Littondale, Langstrothdale and Wharfedale families during the First and Second World Wars. Through words and photographs it examines lives and deaths of all the servicemen whose names are inscribed on the many war memorials and places them back into the dales' villages and landscapes they would have been familiar with. Life on the Home Front is not neglected, with the arrival of the evacuees, the exploits of the Home Guard platoons and the impact of the Army training within the Dales' communities. Many of the 500 photographs provide an evocative look at the way of life in the villages and towns before the onset of the Great War and during the inter-war years. Yet the main theme of Swaledale and Wharfedale Remembered continues to be the sacrifice made by the 'pals' of 1914-1918 and the men who fought for democracy and against fascism during the years 1939-1945.
