The Alps

£9.99 Out Of Stock

Product description

In his introduction to the book the author writes : "The Alps is a very big subject; I knew as much when Mr. Batsford asked me to write a text to supplement the pictures he was proposing to collect. I was still more aware of it when I had written it. But, after all, the universe and God are bigger, and I am sure the men who write about them would not claim an exhaustive knowledge of either. The very size of the Alps increases the chance of my having added something of interest to those whose general knowledge of the chain is greater than mine."

The introduction looks at geology, flora and fauna and climbing. Chapters cover the South-Western Alps, the Central Alps and the Eastern Alps including the Dolomites, plus the Mont Blanc Range, the Bernese Alps and the Pennine Alps.

This first edition is attractively bound in brown cloth with gilt titles and a gilt design outline of a mountain range. The spine has raised bands and has faded slightly, and has a few dark spots. Foxing has affected text block edges and the front and rear fold-out maps, and there are occasional light foxing spot on inside pages. A former owner's initials and 'Christmas 1940' are written neatly on the front free end paper. There are 131 excellent clear b/w photographs throughout the book.
