'The small town of Beaminster, site of a medieval market chartered in 1284, has a history of fire and flood. Local villages include Netherbury, once important for Flax growing and Melplash, the original home of the Melplash Agricultural Show. Mosterton and South Perrott lie close to the Somerset border and westwards are Salway Ash and Bowood. Near Stoke Abbott stands the old Beaminster union workhouse and Broadwinsor boasts links to Charles II and the poets Wordsworth anjd Coleridge. Hooke's history is one of paupers and gentry while Halstock, once the site of a Roman Villa, is neighbour to the villages of Corscombe, Toller Whelme and Chedington.
