The Brasilian Navigator, or Sailing Directory for all the Coasts of Brasil, &c. from the river Para to the Rio de la Plata

£45.99

Product description

This book is very difficult to describe succinctly. It is clearly a version of the Brasilian Navigator, but it varies in its content from both the 1838 and the 1844 versions. It has been rebound and is incomplete. It starts, without preamble with a “Table of Positions” which, with the associated notes, occupies 20 pages. There follow sections 2 through 7 of sequential pages, the seventh section finishing abruptly at page 192 in mid sentence.
This, then, is an incomplete and rebound edition with no title page, contents or concluding sections, no accredited publisher and no date. The book was a practical compendium of practical descriptions of coastlines and landmarks around South America, with some engravings of the silhouettes of mountains and coastlines.
The binding is hardback with wear of edges and corners. The upper part of the spine cover is missing. The end pages are pristine. The text block is tanned with some dog-earing, and irregularity of some of the page edges.
A book designed for day to day use by navigators here in a somewhat arbitrary rebinding but with 192 sequential pages.
