1960 English translation by Gerard Hopkins. Originally published in France in 1932 under the title Le Fil de l' Epee. On reverse of title page the date of publishing is given as 1944 but fixed errata slip reads ' For 1944 read 1932 '. Written shortly after the 1914-18 war, this book considers the position of the French army after four years of terrible experiences, and its prospects as a specialised body within the structure of the state.

Dust jacket has minor tears to front, spine is yellowed with mild nick to the top and slight pen mark on reverse. Not price-clipped. Pages are bright and mostly uncoloured. Spine undamaged. Original cloth binding shows signs of wear at extremities.
