£24.99

Product description

Hardback. (Two Volumes) Peach cloth boards with a gilt motif on the front and gilt titles on quarter brown cloth spine. Good condition. The spine cloth which is part of front and back boards is marked and top of the spine hinge on both copies is beginning to split. Sunning to narrow band on top edge of boards on both volumes. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Tissue guarded decorative title pages in blue and black ink, illustrated frontispiece and endpapers. Contents clean and binding tight. Both volumes have previous owner inscription (same owner). Introduction by Augustine Birrell and illustrated by Charles E. Brock. Published by J. M. Dent & Co 1902 (Fourth edition).

Essays of Elia is a collection of essays written by Charles Lamb. It was first published in book form in 1823, with a second volume, Last Essays of Elia, issued in 1833. Lamb, one of the most engaging personal essayists of all time, began publishing his entertaining Elia essays in the London Magazine in 1820. They were immediately popular and a book-length collection was published in 1823. Inventing the persona of 'Elia' allowed Lamb to be shockingly honest and to gain a playful distance for self-examination.
