The Golden Age - 1915

£19.99

Product description

The Golden Age is a collection of reminiscences about childhood by Kenneth Grahame, most famous for The Wind in the Willows (1908), a children's classic. The Golden Age was first published in 1895 although the 1915 edition is very often described as the First Edition.

The book describes the adventures of five brothers and sisters growing up in rural England in the late nineteenth century. Grahame casts his memories in imagery from Ancient Greece - the adults in their lives are "Olympians", while the chapter titled "The Argonauts" refers to Perseus, Apollo, Psyche and other figures from Greek mythology.

Published by John Lane, The Bodley Head in 1915, the book is hardback with 242 pages and around 10 x 8 x 2” in size. It contains 19 full-page colour illustrations by R.J. Enraght-Moony (examples are shown in photos 1 and 4).

There is browning on the inside and rear covers (photo 8) but the pages are otherwise in good condition (photo 7) and hand cut (photo 5). The cover has some light wear (photo 2) but, otherwise, is also in good condition.

There is a pencil inscription (photo 3) on the top left of the first/inner page marked “1915 First Edition - Wonderful Illustrations”. A series of reviews is included at the end (photo 6).

A really super and somewhat rare 1915 edition of one of Grahame’s best loved books.
