The Green Bicycle Murder

£13.99 Out Of Stock

Product description

The mystery surrounding what became known as the Green Bicycle Murder has intrigued and puzzled both amateur and professional criminologists alike, since the trial in 1920 to the present day.

This notorious case attracted much national interest and has continued to arouse speculation over the years about the motive, the murder weapon and the identity of the murderer.

On a summer evening in 1919, Bella Wright, a young Leicester millworker, was found dead beside her bicycle on a quiet country road not long after being seen riding away from the nearby village of Gaulby with a stranger who rode a green bicycle. Following a much publicized search, Ronald Light, ex-army officer and owner of just such a bicycle, was arrested and tried for her murder, Throughout his testimony Light presented the image of an impeccable officer and gentleman who simply found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. His subsequent acquittal of the murder was controversial, and speculation about the true nature of events on that fateful day and of the accused's true character and history have been the subject of discussion ever since.

C. Wendy East's fascinating review of this celebrated case throws new light on the story. Drawing on the previously closed files of the Director of Public Prosecutions, military documents and a variety of other previously untapped sources, a very different picture of the accused emerges and serious doubts are raised about the way the investigation was conducted.

Was justice served at this famous murder trial or was Ronald Light very fortunate to survive the hangman's rope?

In very good condition with dust jacket.
