The Heart Of Midlothian (Collins' Classics)

£8.99

Product description

The seventh of Sir Walter Scott's 'Waverley Novels', and often regarded as Scott's finest novel, 'The Heart Of Midlothian' is set amongst the Porteous riots in 1736. Based on a story Scott claimed to have received in an unsigned letter, about a certain Helen Walker who had travelled all the way to London by foot, to receive a royal pardon for her sister, who was unjustly charged with infanticide. Scott put Jeanie Deans in the place of Walker, a young woman from a family of highly devout Presbyterians. Jeanie goes to London, partly by foot, hoping to achieve an audience with the Queen through the influence of the Duke of Argyll.

Copy is in good condition for its age (published 1910) and still has its original dust jacket, although it has been slightly worn down over the years. The pages inside suffer from some light foxing throughout, but the print of the words is still readable and clear against the paper. Stamping from previous seller can be found on the opening purple end paper, as well as a pen inscription from another previous owner on the next page.
