The Lancashire Witches in Two Volumes by W. Harrison Ainsworth, 1851

£99.99 Out Of Stock

Product description

A double volume edition of The Lancashire Witches from the 'Cheap Edition of the Works of W. Harrison Ainsworth'. Originally serialised in the Sunday Times newspaper in 1848, this fantasy/historical fiction tells a tale of the events surrounding the pendle witch trials.

This cheap edition is explicitly advertised as a railway edition, so part of the fist mass produced romances for travel. Essentially one of the first 'fantasy novels' here. The main point of interest here is the beautifully printed yellow covers, which although faded, are a great example of the production of that era. Volume 2 is the best preserved.

Both volumes remain in their original boards and bindings, with rubbing to the front and back, and considering the age, these are in very good condition. The first volume has 4 pages that have been repaired by tape in the last 167 years, and the spine cloth is coming loose on the back side. The binding is still tight, and the text very readable. It would probably make a great railway edition today as it did 167 years ago.
