A scarce Dickens' title published in America in the original publisher's cloth binding.
Although not a first edition, this is an early unauthorised edition from Lea & Blanchard. Harpers was the only publisher given permission by Dickens to publish this particular book.

Martin Chuzzlewit was Dickens’s sixth novel. It was first published by Chapman & Hall in instalments that began in January of 1843 and ran through July of 1844.

This copy in bound in brown/black vertically ribbed cloth, with embossed designs front & rear and gilt title and figure on the spine.

CONDITION: One plate is missing of the total 13 and pages 137 to 140 are also absent. Spine is detached at front board but still attached at rear ("partially detached") and is delicate. Heavy browning and staining throughout with some loosened pages but not detached. Spine gilt heavily faded with moderate wear and scuffs to boards. Heavy foxing and browning throughout. Moderate damp staining to end-paper sections of the book either end, several pages in. (See photos)
