The Life and Work of R. W. Sturgess

£130.00

Product description

The Life and Work of R. W. Sturgess

The Fine Arts Society Pty. Ltd. Melbourne. 1938. pp38 (unpaginated).

Boards in buff paper-covered card, quarter bound in tan cloth; all now tastefully distressed: dents and chips around the boards and the scars of time upon the tanned faces. Surreal tipped in countryside image to front centre. The cloth spine covering has disappeared from the lower third leaving the glued stitching completely exposed.

The book was purchased from Angus & Robertson Ltd, of Castlereagh St, Sydney, probably the biggest bookshop in the world at the time. Their plate can be found on the front paste down opposite a personal dedication from Ronald to Pamela, February 1939.

Seven pages of introduction are followed by eighteen smallish water colour images to recto, tipped in along the top edge only. Several of the originals were in the possession of the author's wife. The paintings are framed by quiet line bordering and an expanse of blank page. This is not a busy book.

There were just 300 copies; designed, printed and published in Melbourne. This copy then travelled to Sydney and eighty years later somehow found its way to England.

Wonder how this unique item ended up online?

Most of the second-hand items you see online have been donated, by supporters like you, to our high street stores. Each item is then priced, photographed and listed on this site by our amazing team of volunteers from across the country.

After you have bought your item, our team of volunteers package and dispatch it from the Shop straight to you or your chosen recipient.

All profits from the sales of our goods go towards funding Oxfam's work around the world. We rely on your donations to sell online so please keep the cycle of goodness going!

Oxfam Bookshop Market Harborough

Oxfam is the UK's largest second hand bookseller. Oxfam bookshops offer a wider selection of books than most shops, from modern fiction and leisure interest to more specialist subjects, classics, and rare or collectable books. We also stock an attractive range of greetings cards and a good selection of stationery. Come and browse!

Could you help us by collecting donations from donors homes? Our shop receives many offers of generous donations that we have to turn down as we do not have volunteers able to collect. We would ask you to collect in your own car, at your convenience and reimburse your petrol costs. It might be a couple of times a month and would make a really big difference to our ability to make money.
