The Little Flowers of S Francis of Assisi
Translated from the Italian by T W Arnold, MA
Chatto and Windus, London, 1908.
Hardback; 150 x 210 mm; red boards with gold titles on spine, and on front cover with a design and device in gold; xxxii & 318 pages, top edge gilt, plus 8 pages of advertisements for other books, etc; 8 coloured plates and 24 half-tone plates, frontispiece with tissue guard. No dust jacket.
The book is in good condition. The binding is sound although there is slight cracking along the gutter between the front paste-down and free endpapers. There is very slight wear to the edges of the corners. The spine is faded with wear along the joints. The leaves have been irregularly and raggedly cut. There is foxing and tanning to the fore and bottom edges. The endpapers are tanned, and the back paste-down endpaper has notes in pencil. The recto of the front free endpaper has “202” in pencil. There is some internal foxing in places. Small dog ears here and there.
The Little Flowers of S. Francis of Assisi comprises excerpts of his body of work, divided into 53 short chapters, on the life of Saint Francis of Assisi that was composed at the end of the 14th century, an anonymous Italian text.
