The Lives of Sundry Eminent Persons in This Later Age In Two Parts

£190.00 Out Of Stock

Product description

This is a modern hardback rebinding of this book. Book 1 is entitled Divines and book II Gentry of both sexes. In the subtitle the contents are described as “Printed and Reviewed by himfelf juft before his DEATH. To which is added his own Life, and the Lives of The Countess of Suffolk, Sire Nathaniel Barnardiston, Mr Richard Blackerby and Mr Sanuel Fairclough drawn up by other hands”. The two parts are here in a single volume. The pagination is decidedly odd. pp 1 – 11 is the Life of the Author. There follows an address to the Reader, with a table of the Principal things contained in these lives, a list of all the names of those included and a rather touching “Directions to the Bookbinder” and two sets of errata. The main text of the lives of the Eminent Divines follow with 17 entrants and the pagination being 1 – 214 albeit with some irregularities e.g. p24 of the Divines abuts page 33. . Next are the lives of the English Nobility and the paginations is 89 -214. All the entrants have been checked against the list of names included and all are present. There are a few vignettes of individual individuals and a frontispiece of the author.
The rebinding is somewhat bland but eminently practical. Thus the boards have marbled paper covers externally and leather binding of the spine cover. The corners of the boards and their edges are clean. The end papers are uniform light brown. There are some quite major defects in the text. Primarily there are two excisions, presumably of illustrations. One is on page 201/2 at the end of the section on Mr Owen Stockton. The other from pp 105/6 of the interposed Gentry section where half the page has been cut out at the end of the section on John Lamor. In addition on pp 57/8 there are irregular tears of the text although there is no loss of content, and the final page of the Gentry pp 215/6 has an irregular tear and the edges of this page are a bit frayed. There is slight tanning throughout. Included is a free-lying page, presumably one of the original end pages with an inked sentence recording the appointment of Hugh Clarke to the vicarage of Woolston in 1591.
