1969 reprint published by Dent, an Everyman paperback edition.

When the author, H W Bates, was only about 23 he met Alfred Russel Wallace and together to investigate the natural history of the Amazon. Wallace left after a couple of years but Bates remained for 11 years exploring the area and identified around eight thousand new species, mainly insects.

This edition includes the illustrations that Bates drew whilst on his journey, which were first published with the second edition of this book in 1854. On his return to the UK he had a number of posts including Assistant Secretary of the Royal Geographic Society, President of the Entomological Society and a Fellow of the Royal Society.

The book includes sketches, maps and a useful index.

The cover is a bit creased on the spine, has rubbing wear and fading. A former owner's name is written on the front end paper. The internal pages are in a nice clean condition with a sound binding.
