Alexis, who is turning six, adventures with the toys his father the sailor has brought home. The 29 year old author's first book of children's fiction, the others being written at least 10 years later. An early children's book editor for Heinemann and Methuen, Graham became the founding editor of Puffin Books, and thus heavily influenced the quality of works for children on both sides of the Atlantic. Although not riveting, her book avoids the artificial voice of most minor children's writers of this period. The plates are fascinating, by an artist who worked for the London Underground Group.
