The North Eastern Railway: First Edition

£15.99

Product description

This book has its dust jacket which is illustrated with photos. The dust jacket has some wear to the edges and a tear on the spine. The top of the dust jacket spine has been mended with sellotape. Inside it is clean and tight with only slight marking on the edges due to age. The book has many photographs which provide a record of this railway company. Written at the time of Beeching it provides a historical record of the railways before they were drastically reduced in size.

"The London & North Eastern Railway" is an uncomplicated book. It tells us, in straightforward terms, the 25 year history of one of the 'big four' railway companies which were forcibly formed in 1923. The book first tells of the formation of the company - the amalgamation of several railway companies with very different sizes, operations and cultures. As the new company struggled to come together, it was struck by the General Strike of 1926 and then the Great Depression. The company recovered well in the 1930's, however, until the out break of war in 1939. After the war, it had only a breathing space before being nationalised in 1948. The book, written by an ex-employee, captures the pride and sense of achievement of the people who worked for the company.

Oxfam Bookshop Bath

The Bath Oxfam Books and Music shop has been open since 2001. We stock a wide selection of books, vinyl, cds and dvds but always welcome donations to keep our shelves full and interesting. Following our shop refit in 2009 we have a modern, bright and spacious interior where customers are welcome to browse at their leisure. We do not specialise in any one area but often seem to do particularly well with History books and Vinyl. Thanks to the wonderful donations we receive on a daily basis through the door, and from our local Book Banks, we offer our customers a fantastic range of stock both in the shop and online. Please come and see for yourselves!
