The Old East Indiamen

£14.99 Out Of Stock

Product description

Although this book is in rather poor condition its very defects are part of its attraction. The name H W Shute is written not once but three times on the introductory pages and, to judge by the handwriting, it was he who wrote some sceptical asides in the margins and below some of the illustrations. He was clearly well informed and somewhat scathing, stating that some of the vessels did not belong to the HEC (Honourable EastIndia Company?) There are also a couple of newspaper cuttings on maritime matters pasted in.
Werner Lauri hardback with no DJ. The spine cover is almost detached and very faded and grubby. There is a colour picture pasted onto the front cover. Considerable edge and corner wear to the boards. Colour frontispiece with protective transparency. A little generalised tanning of the pages and occasional foxing. The binding of the text block is good.
You really get a feeling that Mr Shute was a knowledgeable enthusiast but it has to be recognised that this book is a reading copy.
