The Open Road - E.V. Lucas
Methuen & Co Limited, London. Thirty-first edition, 1922. 369pp. Blue cloth boards, very faded at spine. Gilt title: "The Open Road. EV Lucas"
Boards are knocked at corners and spine is weakening but still good. Only a narrow gutter. Frontispiece shows drawing of a road winding through a forest. Very rare jacket starting to disintegrate through wear and tear; now in two parts, with portion of spine cover absent. Front cover shows a flock of swooping swallows catching butterflies. Price 6/6 net. Owner's name neatly penned into front endpapaer: JE Baker 1923.
Book block is in good condition. Pages are beginning to yellow but still nice and bright.
"The first complete and illustrated, although strictly unofficial, history of the War [WWI], from the declaration to the present moment, which, under the title 'Quoth the Raven' has been prepared in collaboration by a well-known author and artist, who conceal their identity beneath the initials EVL and GM. In their preface, the authors state that no pains have been spared to make their record as authentic as the muddled condition of modern memories will permit."
Thus we have a book that is poetical, whimsical and lyrical, with numerous gems from famous contributors. No illustrations.
