THE POETICAL WORKS OF LORD BYRON

£50.00 Out Of Stock

Product description

This is possibly the first edition of John Murray's new and completed edition of Byron's poetry, with notes by eminent personages, including Sir Walter Scott. The frontispiece is a portrait of Byron and there are a further 10 engravings in black and white, a chronology of his life and facsimiles of his handwriting at various stages. The binding is signed by Wiseman (probably of Cambridge) and is in red "morocco" leather tooled on the front and back covers and spine with what appear to be the coat of arms of Jesus College Cambridge. All page edges are gilded and there is a tooled gold embossed decoration on the inside edge of both front and back cover. The binding is sound, with some wear to the spine edges and very slight wear on the corners. The boards show some signs of use and the spine has faded slightly. The front fly leaf and frontispiece are detached but are undamaged and could be easily refixed. The text pages are clean and unmarked or torn, but the plates are foxed. There is the signature and bookplate of what seems to be the first owner inside the front cover, with a second signature on the facing page.
