The remarkable life of Victoria Drummond, marine engineer

£9.99 Out Of Stock

Product description

This book was produced by Victoria’s niece, based on a part-written memoir and diary entries. Unfortunately she was not a fellow seafarer, nor an historian, so the book lacks insight, but on the plus side she has resisted the temptation to meddle so you can pick out the essentials of this remarkable tale. Life as an engineer was incredibly tough and dangerous in those days, but memoirs by engineers very rare indeed, so the fact that this one is about a woman makes it doubly interesting. Moreover, apart from her initial training, she did not serve with ‘good’ companies, but in the tramps and ‘flag of convenience’ ships that have been largely forgotten by history.

Victoria Alexandrina Drummond MBE (1894–1978), was the first woman marine engineer in Britain and first woman member of Institute of Marine Engineers. In World War II she served at sea as an engineering officer in the British Merchant Navy and received awards for bravery under enemy fire.

Wear and very minor tears on dust-jacket, the pages and structural integrity of the book is otherwise fine.
