City of Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, Monograph No 6, 1983.
Soft-bound; 205 x 295 mm; pictorial cover of South End House, Charfield, May 1982; xx & 316 pages. No dust jacket. LXVIII plates in monochrome plus 148 line drawings.
The book is in good condition. The binding is sound though the book is very slightly cocked. The cream covers are a little tanned and slightly grubby with a little bumping to the edges. The spine has vertical creasing as the book is now loose and lies flat when open. There is a small price sticker on the back cover. The contents are clean and unmarked with a stub at the back of the book.
In this monograph, the author has listed and mapped all the houses of north Avon and south Gloucestershire in the period 1400-1720 known to her at December 1981 and her Gazetteer (67 houses) comprises a detailed description in note form of a major selection of them, fully planned and illustrated. Individual chapters deal with plans, construction, detail and decoration, outbuildings, dating, documentary evidence, and conclusions.
This is an outstanding work of research and scholarship that will appeal to all with an interest in, or who are studying in this field.
