The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister (1791-1840) - signed copy

£8.99

Product description

Anne Lister was not the stereotypical woman of her era - she was an independent woman of means, a traveller, and a lesbian. Unburdened by the confines of marriage or family duty, she not only avoided the pitfalls many of her female counterparts had to endure, she also cultivated a relationship that allowed both her and her lover's wealth to increase so they could live as they wished.

The diaries she kept during her lifetime give us a glimpse into the life and loves of such an extraordinary woman. Written partly in code, Helen Whitbread has spent years decoding and transcribing them.

'Engaging, revealing, at times simply astonishing: Anne Lister's diaries are an indispensable read for anyone interested in the history of gender, sexuality, and the intimate lives of women' Sarah Waters.

In extremely good condition, with only minor shelf wear, the photograph on the cover features Maxine Peake as Anne Lister and Anna Madeley as Mariana Belcombe from the BBC drama production of 2010. Includes a signed dedication from the author on the title page: "To Kate and Ruth Best wishes Helena Whitbread Sommerby 12/6/2011".
