The Story of No.2 Company of the 7th Battn. Somerset Home Guard

£70.00

Product description

The Story of No. 2 Company of the 7th Battn. Somerset Home Guard

No author. Printed for private circulation only; Bennett Brothers Ltd, Bristol; nd.

Front cover annotated in black ink: “To Edward from Father March 1945”.

Soft-bound; 150 x 220 mm; 84 pages. No dust jacket.

The book is in fair condition. The binding is reasonably sound though with some cracking. The covers are grubby with part of the bottom of the spine missing. Inside of the front cover annotated in black ink: “(Pte) E J Cannock 19 WESTBOURNE AVENUE KEYNSHAM BRISTOL Pg 64”. Some marks internally. Pencil annotations pages 64/65. Some dog ears.

The Home Guard was stood down on 1 November 1944 and the text of this book shows this account was written shortly thereafter. It was therefore completed while records were still available and memories fresh. It contains a wealth of detail about the composition and experiences of this single company of the Home Guard including the nominal roll of all ranks serving at the stand down. It is possibly a rare survival and is likely to be of interest to those researching in this field.
