The Tourist in Italy: Landscape Annual 1833

£50.00

Product description

From the days of the 'Grand Tour', usually undertaken by younger sons of aristocrats who otherwise had nothing to occupy them, Italy has been a magnet for travellers, its long history from the days of the Romans being an endless source of fascination for artists, architects, garden designers - and its food and wine offering plenty to those with an interest in gastronomy. This book would therefore have been enormously popular when it appeared in 1833, as it covers all these aspects, spicing up the dry details with anecdotes of star-crossed lovers, battles, piracy and other similar tales.

Thomas Roscoe (1791–1871 London) was an English author and translator. He turned to writing after his father became bankrupt, and "The Tourist in Switzerland and Italy" was published in 1830, the first volume of the 'Landscape Annual', followed for 8 years by similar volumes on Italy, France, and Spain.

Our copy is in good general condition for its age, bound in dark green full leather with gilt decoration and title on spine and impressed 'key' border on the front and back. There is external wear consistent with age - shelf wear to top & tail of spine, rubbing of corners and spine angles, fading & rubbing to spine, top front corner badly bumped, others less so. Inside, the binding is generally firm (slight weakness at the foot of p.256-7) and pages clean and generally bright (tissue guards lightly tanned). A very few brownish marks occasionally seen at the bottom of some pages. All page edges gilt. Frontispiece, vignette and all 24 B/W plates present. Previous owner's name on front pastedown - interestingly, dated 1832...
