The West Riding of Yorkshire at the Opening of the XX Century/ Contemporary Biographies

£60.00

Product description

Volume 6 in Pike's New Century Series, this book contains approximately 300 biographies of men who were prominent in the West Yorkshire area at the beginning of the Twentieth century. They were involved in the arts, commerce, law and medicine. The nobility and gentry of the county are also included. Each entry is accompanied by a photograph of the subject.

An introductory essay by W. Herbert Scott provides a brief history of the West Riding, concluding with sections on Leeds, Bradford, Halifax and Huddersfield. It contains over 100 photographs of views and buildings including many of the county's old houses.

Internally the book is in good condition. The pages are clear with the exception of foxing to the edges near the beginning. The plate on the frontispiece and the last page of biographies also has some marking and foxing.

The covers are red with gold lettering and motifs to the front. However, both boards are detached and the spine is missing. The covers are also badly rubbed.

Large and heavy item.
