Product description

Two large, heavy volumes in original full red leather binding. Ridges spines with heavy gilt decoration and gilt titles; boards with gilt outlining and decoration, gilt in-turns plus, in the centres, 'Higher Line Essay James Prize 1885'. The boards have some darkening towards the margins, edge and corner wear, a little surface scuffing and some pale marking in the grain of the leather. The front board of volume I has a dark partial ring mark in the lower right section and a surface scratch mark above it. Surface scuffing along the hinge lines. Spines are chipped at the top and base particularly the top of volume I. Bright gilt page edges all round. Marbled pastedowns and first/last free endpapers. On both front pastedowns is a prize plate dated 1885. Some light foxing on the endpapers and title pages but the text blocks are very clean. No inscriptions. Tight binding. The plates have some light tanning around the margins. Volume II has a tear across part of the lower half of p163. An excellent set of two well bound volumes with steel engravings, edited by Charles Knight with introductory notices to each play and text explanations after each one. No publication date printed. Very heavy

Lymington is on the South coast, bordering on the New Forest National Park which was created as a Royal Forest in 1079 by William the Conqueror, and first recorded as 'Nova Foresta' in the Doomsday Book in 1086. Our Oxfam Shop at 73, The High Street is in a lovely Georgian building, the tallest in Lymington. The elegant Georgian buildings lining the wide main street were built mostly for merchants in the local salt trade. The famous Saturday market brings the town to life with its variety of stalls. The area is renowned for outdoor pursuits, including camping, sailing, windsurfing, and surfing, as well as forest walks and horse riding.
