Thornton’s Temple of Flora

£19.99

Product description

Thornton’s Temple of Flora
With plates faithfully reproduced from the original engravings and the work described by…
Geoffrey Grigson
With Bibliographical Notes by Handasyde Buchanan
Collins, London, 1972. First published 1951.

Hardback; 220 x 310 mm; red boards with titles in gold on spine, and a logo in gold on front cover; vi & 66 pages, top edge page ends painted red; plates in colour and duotone. Original unclipped dust jacket enclosed in a transparent protective cover.
The book is in very good condition. The binding is sound. Minor wear to the dust jacket. Page end tanning, and tanning of the front and back matter.

“Thornton’s ‘Temple of Flora’ was one of the most splendid folios of flower engravings ever published. Since it appeared in 1807, its fame has grown until a good copy costs hundreds of pounds and individual plates have become collector’s pieces. In 1951 William Collins and George Rainbird issued a folio edition reproducing, facsimile, twelve of the original thirty-two colour plates and twenty-four monochrome engravings: the colour plates were the choicest. Since the virtue of the 1807 edition was in the engravings, a new text was prepared comprising an introduction by Geoffrey Grigson and a bibliography by Handasyde Buchanan.”
