Tours in Scotland 1747, 1750, 1760

£45.00 Out Of Stock

Product description

Scottish History Society, Edinburgh, 1887, first edition, hardback, no d/w, pp375, 50 illustrations based on Bishop Pococke's pen drawn sketches in his original manuscript and a frontispiece portrait of the Bishop based on a painting.

This rare book reproduces an original manuscript found by the editor in the Library of the British Museum which collects a series of letters written in the form of a journal by Bishop Pococke chronicling his tours of Scotland during 1747, 1750 and 1760. The tours are extensive and the descriptions detailed but none the less readable for all that even to a modern reader. A fascinating record from the 18th century. Book includes a biographical sketch of the Bishop.

Very good condition. Blue cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine and gilt design to front. Extremities show some bumping and rubbing and there are a few dents along one edge but damage is light for age. Pages are tanned but otherwise clean and undamaged. Binding is sound. Home made book plate on front free endpaper.

There is a dedication by the editor to a Mr Alan Carter, dated Nov 1887 on a fly leaf.
