Edward John Trelawny was the personification of an image which he himself had created - a dramatic example of a man who moulded himself into an adopted mask. In this biographical detection the author traces what lay behind the mask of a natural rebel. Certainly Trelawny rebelled against school and against his father and his officers in the Navy; but did he in fact desert to the enemy and join the French corsairs attacking the British ships in the Indian Ocean? It was Trelawny who cremated Shelley's body and snatched the heart from the ashes, but was it he who subsequently persuaded Byron to fight for the Greeks? He fought in the Greek War of Independence in company with Odysseus, whose half-sister he married; he nearly lost his life defending their cave headquarters against Turks and rival Greeks, but was he the organising mountain chieftain that he claims to have been?

With the deaths of Shelly and Byron much of the corsair impetus was lost and he spent several years in America toying with the idea of starting a communistic settlement; but back in England, and with the publication of his sensational memoirs (which he continually embellished), he became a social and literary lion and the self-appointed personal spokesman of two romantic poets, later becoming a 'grand old man' of the V
