Vestiges of the Natural History of Creation, First Edition 1844

£1,500.00

Product description

This book is an early exploration of the ideas of evolution - called in this book "the natural history of creation". It is the first public work on evolution and pre-dates Darwin's 'Origin of Species' by fifteen years. The author was Robert Chambers, a Scottish journalist. No author of this work is cited on the book as the content was considered so controversial when it was published that the writer's authorship was not acknowledged until after his death.

This copy is an extremely rare first edition of October 1844 - only 750 copies were printed. Two months later a second edition of 1000 copies was printed (also dated 1844). The Second Edition has 394 pages to the First Edition's 390 pages. The Second Edition also had some small corrections. Photograph number 7 shows the last page of this copy with the page number - 390 - in the top corner.

This copy is securely bound. There is some wear to the cover - a little edgewear and bumped corners, and rubbing to the boards with a little dark and light discolouration. (Please see photographs 1 & 2.) The spine has some damage - the bottom edge is frayed and there is a piece missing at the top and also a small tear above the title. (Please see photograph 3). There is a previous owner's nameplate inside the front cover (photograph 4). Dust marking to top edge of page block. The page block is in good condition. The pages are remarkably bright and have only an occasional finger mark or slight foxing. There are no annotations or marginalia. We have also provided a photograph of the half-title page (photograph 5), the title page (photograph 6) and of the small sticker showing the book binder's name (photograph 8).
