Product description

Westward the Course: A Story of the Lewis and Clark Expedition

Hildegarde Hawthorne

Longmans, Green and Co, New York, London, Toronto, 1946. First edition.

Hardback; 145 x 210 mm; red boards with black titles on spine and pictorial on front cover; viii & 280 pages. Endpaper maps. Original unclipped dust jacket.

The book itself is in good condition. The binding is sound. The dust jacket has open and closed tears, and has some tanning internally. Minor shelf wear. Page end tanning. Fly title annotated in black ink: “Raymond Christmas 1946 Love from Mummy”.

Hildegarde Hawthorne (1871 - 1952) was a writer of supernatural and ghost stories, a poet and biographer. She was the granddaughter of Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804 - 1864) and daughter of Julian Hawthorne (1846 - 1934).
The Lewis and Clark Expedition from May 1804 to September 1806 was the first American expedition to cross the western portion of the United States. It began near St Louis, made its way westward, and passed through the Continental Divide of the Americas to reach the Pacific coast.

“Reading history as Hildegarde Hawthorne writes it is to see each exciting event as though it were just on the point of happening. Her story here is of the Lewis and Clark expedition and in particular of young Harry Whitcomb and George Shannon.”
