Wright's Leicestershire and Rutland Directory - C.N. Wright
Including the boroughs of Leicester and Loughborough and market towns of Ashby de-la Zouche, Melton Mowbray, Hinckley, Market Harborough, Oakham, &c &c. pp798 (including an absorbing thirty page gazette featuring every trade known to man.)
Robust bright blue boards with CNW badge to centre in gilt and black border decoration. Rear board gilt advertisement of Pearce & Sons, jewellers (a well known Leicester firm of the day.)
Olive green spine with gilt titles and fancywork. The spine strip is in a poor state and is completely open to the rear edge, exposing the packing card within. Smaller tears to fore edge. Inner hinges cracked.
Paste down advertisement for Hollingworth & Co. wine merchants, offering fine cognac at 30/- a gallon.
Very good general structure inside; all pages tanned. Sprawling preface, mixed up with more fascinating gazette material and at page XXXVII a fine vintage map of the two counties in pastel shades. Around the map edges are more adverts, some of which have tears to the creases.
Wonderful introductions to each town, village and hamlet.
A fine slice of social history, highly absorbing throughout.
