Zululand - A Mission Tour of South Africa

£54.99 Out Of Stock

Product description

A description of missionary travels in Victorian South Africa with a great deal of both local colour and information on the state of the country and the "noble race" of the Zulu Caffre (a word the author prefers to "the new fashion" Kaffir). The tone is set in the preface: "The reader must not...anticipate any wonderful explorations; or look for lion hunts, and elephant slaughters; but must be contented with the incidents and adventures of upwards of two years mission rambles, in that portion of Zululand which now forms the British Colony of Natal. He must suppose his tent pitched with ours in the flowery glades of Southern Africa. He must join us around our bivouac fire, and at the muster of natives from some outlandish crall, or must fancy himself one of the party in our ordinary evening assembly...". Of considerable historical and sociological interest, setting out in some detail contemporary western attitudes to indigenous people (the author appears to have been a man of some insight and humanity). Also some very vivid travel writing. Scarce.

Green board covers with title "Zululand" in gold on front and spine. Corners and spine bumped and some covering missing from bottom, back corner. Strip of title page, approx. 1 cm wide, missing from title page above title. Pencil underlining and marking to text but pages generally bright, with little foxing, and binding tight. Despite the imperfections, in good shape for its age.
